3D Printing Tips & Tricks for ABS & PLA Printing

Starting with ABS & PLA printing can be a little tricky as it requires you to set the right ABS printing temperature and bed adhesion and consider several essentials. However, with the correct guidance, you can achieve rapid prototyping for the desired results. Here are some tips to help you overcome common difficulties while 3D printing with ABS and PLA filaments.

5 Rules to Follow While 3D Printing with ABS & PLA Filaments

Get the Printing Temperature Right

ABS and PLA offer excellent mechanical properties. However, they can warp or shrink if the temperature is incorrect. To eliminate warping, here are some tips you can follow:

  • For ABS Filaments: The ideal ABS printing temperature for extruders is between 210 to 250°C unless specified otherwise by the manufacturer. You can modify the extruder temperature settings to get the desired print quality and strength.
  • For PLA Filaments: The ideal PLA printing temperature for extruders starts from 180 to 230°C.

Make Sure to Get a Heating Bed

While 3D printing with ABS or PLA filaments, it is best to get a heating bed to prevent warping. This will help you provide better layer adhesion. Here are a few tips on how to set the right heating bed temperature for ABS and PLA:

  • For ABS Filament: The ideal glass transition temperature range is 110°C.
  • For PLA Filament: The best PLA bed temperature is between 55 to 70°C.

Adjust the Slicer Settings

When PLA printing temperature is too cold, you will find that it fails to adhere to the previous layer. You can use different bed adhesion tools to control warping and cracking issues and ensure the slicer settings are proper to prevent mishaps.

  • For ABS prints: You can fine-tune the fan settings to keep the print warm. Tools such as raft and brim can also increase the surface area touch with the bed.
  • For PLA prints: Using a cooling fan and placing the nozzle at the right height can make a difference in the quality of PLA prints.

The Need for Enclosure

After setting the ABS and PLA nozzle temperature, you need to have an enclosure for ABS prints. Despite fine-tuning the temperature settings, you may notice some splits and cracks in the final ABS prints. This happens when heat escapes from the printing bed that leads to warping. While PLA filaments do not need an enclosure, ABS prints need them for a smoother finish. Here are some benefits of using an enclosure for ABS 3D printing:

  • Protects the print from fluctuating temperatures.
  • Traps fumes and enhances fire safety in the printing room.
  • Does not let dust and impurities affect the result.

Don’t Forget About Post-Processing

After perfecting your ABS and PLA bed temperature settings, it is vital to store and protect them.

  • You can smooth any defects by using sandpaper. This way, you can remove unwanted material and get a smoother finish.
  • For porous surfaces, you can also use an epoxy coating. This will help improve the strength and durability of the print.
  • Ensure that you are using different tools for post-processing PLA and ABS prints.
